Q: What is equine massage?
A:
Equine massage is a therapy offered for horses along with chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathic medicine and other natural treatment methods (known as
CAM
; Complementary and Alternative Medicine). It is hands-on treatment used to increase range of motion, improve performance, stimulate circulation and increase mobility. Massage aids in stretching out the horses neck, poll, shoulder, back, and hip so that (s)he can heal more quickly and improve in their respective disciplines.
Q: Is it safe?
A:
Yes. A horse's muscles cannot be penetrated to the point of injury by human hands as massage therapy seeks to address soft tissue and superficial muscles. Every horse has its own individual needs so each treatment is tailored to the issues and goals presented. During the treatment horses may pin their ears, toss their heads, and/or exhibit behaviors seen under saddle- this is normal and often a key indicator as to which area is in need of treatment.
Q: Do I need my veterinarian's approval before my horse can receive treatment?
A:
Yes, this is required in the state of Oregon as a way to safeguard the horse's health and well-being. I am more than happy to work in conjunction with your veterinarian. Massage will
never
take the place of veterinary care, treatment, or diagnosis and Dancing Deer Therapy & Sales stands firmly by this.
Q: How often should my horse be massaged?
A:
If your horse is on a regular trail, show, and/or competition schedule, it is suggested that (s)he have treatment at least once a month, if not more frequently. We offer many packaged tailored to pre-/post-event treatment, rehabilation from illness or injury, or general wellness that benefit your equine athlete and help maintain your pocketbook! Massage therapy is not a quick fix and just as us humans require stress reducers in our busy lives, horses benefit from muscle relief from regular massage.
Q: Can I ride my horse before or after a massage?
A:
We suggest, unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian, walk/trotting your horse to warm up the muscles and encourage circulation. We do not suggest riding the horse to the point of sweating or heavy breathing. After the massage, it is best to wait until the following day to continue your training. Hand walking your horse for 10+ minutes after the massage is strongly recommended as this will help flush out the toxins released from the massage. Muscles can become sore, as people who have received massage can attest, so make sure your horse has plenty of access to water and if the weather is cold a blanket may be put on.
Q: Will this help me win my show/competition?
A:
We cannot guarantee you will win since there are many factors that go into preparing your horse for show/competition, but massage certainly won't hurt your chances!
